Install Upgrade for Development before upgrading live site

We currently run SS 4.3.3 on our live site. All is well, and I'd like to keep it that way.

I'd like to upgrade to 4.5, mainly to get current and take advantage of the Responsive capabilities of this version. We'll need to play around with modifying our theme in the new version before it goes live.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to install the upgrade on a test server, perhaps a subdomain set up specifically for that purpose, so we can hack away at it while the live site hums along unaffected.

My assumption is that if we do this, it will also allow us to work out any upgrade bugs in advance, so when we have the shiny new version ready to go, the transition will be smoother.

Is there a recommended way to do this that is simpler for someone with low-tech skills like myself?

I believe we added the dev domain for you correct? Open a ticket if you need further assistance.

    Thank you, Chris-

Yes, you did indeed. It happened very quickly and was much appreciated.

I'm running into some install issues and will be calling in shortly to get those resolved.
